Live Update: 6 Brand-New Restaurants Listed In The MICHELIN Guide Taipei & Taichung – May 2022

The MICHELIN Guide Inspectors reveal some of their latest favorite additions via live updates monthly.

MICHELIN Guide Inspectors spend all year on the road uncovering the best restaurants to recommend and reveal some of their latest favorite additions monthly ahead of the annual launch event.

Restaurants in Taipei and Taichung will be added to the selection monthly, on the second Wednesday of every month. The newly selected venues will feature on both the website and the app. There’s a special entry “New” created for those newly-listed restaurants and those restaurants will be highlighted with a ‘New’ symbol, for easy identification.

Some of these newly recommended establishments might go on to earn distinctions at the MICHELIN Star Revelation ceremony, so follow the monthly releases closely and watch this space!

For this month, the inspectors share 6 of their favorite newly recommended restaurants in Taipei and Taichung.  Why not add them to your list and give them a try?

Antico Forno

Taipei

Young crowds have been coming here in droves since 2013 for its famous thin-crust pizzas – from simple classics like Margherita to crowd-pleasers such as Tartufata. The chef learned his craft in Italy and his respect for tradition is evidenced by dishes like Ginocchio di Agnello alla Milanese, tender in texture and robust in flavour. The room feels homely and cosy, and many items are for sharing. The Italian wines represent excellent value.

The phone book-like menu may be a bit intimidating, but you’re never more than a flip away from familiar and much-loved dishes from the group’s flagship outlets. A branch serves the brand’s greatest hits from the past 40 years, along with new creations and hidden items previously only familiar for those in the know. Dishes such as shiso leaf oyster fritters, and dried radish fried rice are simply unmissable.

Yu Kapo

Taipei

This renowned kappo restaurant moved to this address in 2021; it has a minimalist look with light wood and a slate grey palette. It now boasts five private rooms, the largest one seating 20. There is only one omakase menu for lunch and one for dinner, featuring fish from Yilan County and seasonal produce from Japan. The kamameshi course following the main is always a highlight, using ingredients such as unagi or Hiroshima oysters.

Taichung

This cheerful restaurant is run by its Vietnamese owner. The menu tips towards the Northern end of her home country, and cilantro is used sparingly to cater to local taste. The speciality bun dau mam tom consists of rice noodle squares, pork intestines, pork feet, blood sausage, deep-fried tofu and leafy greens, alongside fermented shrimp paste, or a fish sauce dip. Nem ran (fried spring rolls) and pork skewers are also worth trying.

Taichung

Exclusivity is the key word here – only five tables of lucky guests a night can sample the French-Japanese fusion cuisine created by the young chef who honed his skills in France. Bare concrete walls, heavy dark green drapes, solid walnut wood furniture and local handmade pottery work nicely with each other in this small, but elegant room. Dishes are artfully plated; some are whimsical in presentation. Early reservations are recommended.

Meidz Seafood

Taichung

Before the owning couple opened this restaurant in 1989, they had been fishers and fishmongers. Now a household name and managed by the second generation, Meidz still prides itself on quality seafood mostly imported from Penghu. Oval squid in soy, three-cup grouper, rice vermicelli soup with pomfret, and catch of the day such as dusky stingfish are all excellent choices. Reservations are recommended at weekends.
